Futurebound: New Balance MSX90BG “Surplus”
Not to be left out of a truly eventful year, the New Balance MSX90BG “Surplus” is the brand’s latest and (possibly) greatest. Of course, this isn’t their first new release for the year. NB has been experimenting with new takes on its age-old design philosophy.
But, the MSX90BG may well be remembered as their most articulate effort. In a lot of ways, this shoe represents some of the best qualities of the iconic New Balance sneakers of the past. The base here is in a very practical mesh construction.
The combination of airflow and stable coverage makes this a winning choice. On top of that, New Balance goes with their usual helping of quality overlays. Here, we see these via sections of suede running along the midsole towards the heel.
The inner linings bring in the ventilation of the mesh but also sport a thin layer. Underfoot, every step in this shoe is going to feel like an absolute dream. A rubber midsole encapsulates a REVLite sole unit. Much like the ENCAP set-up that New Balance likes to use, you can expect some quality impact protection as well as durability.
To keep you from slipping and sliding all over the place, the outsole rubber construction is fitted in a unique pattern that maximizes its coverage.
It’s also worth noting that the neutral tones here make it easy to rock these shoes with nearly any outfit. It’s a nice reminder that New Balance can competently pull off both the louder and more subtle schemes eloquently.
And, as always, the looks don’t overtake the shoe’s practical qualities. The mesh and suede combo upper pragmatically comes together with a soft midsole for a solid design. Like many of New Balance’s releases, this new look is going to be hard to pass up.
